FOR many, the idea of a spa conjures up a predominately female environment, but that idea is changing.
Think of a spa and you probably think of words like ‘pampering,’ possibly a mani-pedi in a pink treatment room? But the truth is at its core, the spa experience is about relaxation and stress relief – a concept both men and women can get on board with. According to research by the International Spa Association, nearly half of spa goers in the US are male (47 per cent.) And what’s the number one reason men and women go to a spa? Stress management.
ISPA President, Lynne McNees, said: “As a global society, we are experiencing more stress than ever before and seeking alternative ways to cope. Visiting a spa gives you permission to pause.”
So, at La Vie Spa, the team work to create a bespoke treatment tailored to your needs in an environment that is welcoming to everyone.
We specialise in deep tissue massage, focusing on muscle tension relief.
From office workers, to athletes and construction workers, our therapist Verna has helped alleviate muscular aches, pains and conditions like sciatica.
Verna said that often men can be put off by the idea of going to a spa, but once they experience it, they see the benefit of the pain relief, stress reduction and relaxation it can bring.
Starting with a thorough consultation, our team work to find out the root cause of injuries. The deep tissue or sports massage is conducted in conjunction with breathing techniques to boost relaxation and help to detoxify the body. Although visitors often feel immediately better after a massage, it is recommended that treatments are maintained over a longer period to get the greatest benefit.
Verna said: “It’s basically like an MOT for your body. You’re going to need to continue looking after your car. You take it in for an MOT once a year but if you don’t put fuel in it, it won’t take you anywhere. If you don’t put brake fluid in it, you could have an accident.”
She added: “If you want your body to do the things you want it to do, you need to look after it.”
The benefits of regular massage are: it releases tension, it makes you relax and it detoxifies – as you are getting rid of lactic acid build-up from deep within the soft tissues. The additional benefits include lowering stress levels and improved mental health.
At La Vie Spa we can also help with male grooming as well, including waxing, manicures, pedicures and facials, using luxurious Elemis products.
Verna said that men’s skin can be a lot thicker than women’s and so needs different moisturisers and care.
In next month’s article, we will be discussing the different treatments available to men and their benefits.
